A WINTER WONDERLAND FOR ALL LEVELS
Last Updated: August 21, 2000
Davos is the largest ski
resort in the Alps, sophisticated, international, affluent and modern. Europe’s highest town has successfully built
on its significant role in the early years of winter sports by constantly
improving its ski area, so that it remains one of the world’s best. Davos is a member of the “Best of the Alps”
an exclusive association of top European resorts where guests are guaranteed
diversity, comfort and quality. Davos
is the second largest area within Switzerland.
The many facets of this remarkable resort mean that marketing slogans
such as “Europe’s most extensive alpine resort” are not really
far-fetched. The town spreads along the
valley floor for several miles, the more concentrated western section is Davos
Platz, and the eastern section Davos Dorf.
The world’s first T-Bar lift was installed in Davos in 1934.
SKI AREAS:
The 196 miles of ski trails above Davos are
divided into seven areas. Parsenn,
Strela-Schatzalp, Madrisa, Gotschna on one side of the valley are lift
linked. Jakobshorn, Rinerhorn, and
Pischa on the other side of the valley are not interconnected but can be easily
reached by free bus service. The
Parsenn area is the largest and most popular, of the ski sectors. It is lift-linked to the neighboring resort
of Klosters, a traditional favorite of the British Royal family. On the other side of town, there are more
ways up the Jakobshorn, the resorts “fun mountain” most popular with
boarders. Funiculars or cable cars
reach most of the ski areas with the vast majority of the skiing above the tree
line. Most of the trails are red and
blue; experts will find several routes to entertain, including an 11 mile
descent to Fideris and the chance of skiing over to Arosa in the footsteps of
Sherlock Homes creator over a century ago.
