- Know when race registration begins and arrive at the mountain early.
It’s very stressful to arrive late and attempt to register while doing the many other things that need to be done to be ready. Give yourself plenty of time.
- Inspect the course before start time.
After the course is set by the mountain’s race department, it is usually open for inspection. The rules for course inspection can vary depending on the officials organizing the race. Make yourself aware of them. Don’t ski through the gates or ski parallel to the gates (a.k.a. shadowing)during inspection. You’re only allowed to sideslip the course. If you have any questions about the course during inspection, be sure and ask one of our experienced racers. Most of them will be glad to assist you.
- Don’t miss your start.
Make yourself aware of the start order. Racers very often start in order of their bib numbers. The mountain’s race department as well as other competitors don’t appreciate racers starting out of order.
- If you miss a gate during your run, stop and hike back for it.
It’s always a good idea to finish a your run and avoid getting a DQ (disqualification) on the scoreboard.
- If you lose a ski or DQ, clear the course as soon as possible.
The next racer may already be on the way. Pick up your gear and quickly move out of the course.
- If you believe you were interfered with on the course, you can usually receive a rerun.
After the occurrence, ski off the course immediately and ask a member of the race crew for a rerun.
- Show good sportsmanship.
Alpine racing is quite challenging and can be frustrating at times. Don’t vent out frustration in a negative manner. Maintain your composure and act appropriately.
- Voice any grievances you have to the racing chairperson or team captain, unless they are unavailable.
They will represent you at races with the race officials should there be a question about a decision.
